The Australian Government’s Modern Manufacturing Strategy is specifically targeted to harness Australian manufacturing capability and drive our economic recovery and future resilience. The vision for the Strategy is for Australia to be recognised as a high-quality and sustainable manufacturing nation that helps to deliver a strong, modern and resilient economy for all Australians. Under the MMS, the Government has identified six with the potential to deliver long‑term transformational outcomes for the Australian economy.

  1. Resources Technology & Critical Minerals Processing
  2. Space
  3. Medical Products
  4. Food & Beverage
  5. Defence
  6. Recycling & Clean Energy

Funding now available for National Priority Areas under the Modern Manufacturing Initiative

The $1.3 billion Modern Manufacturing Initiative (MMI) sits under the MMS and will transform Australian businesses, helping them to scale-up, translate ideas into commercial successes and integrate into local and international value chains. Matched funding between $1 million to $20 million is now available for businesses with projects in Defence, and Recycling & Clean Energy following the launch of two National Manufacturing Priority road maps for Defence and Recycling & Clean Energy.

MMI investment will be guided by these road maps.

The Defence road map identifies opportunities for businesses to build on existing areas of strength such as military vehicle and aircraft manufacturing, naval shipbuilding and marine hardware production, cutting-edge digital technologies such as 3D printing, and explosives and propellants. Applications for Defence projects close 5pm AEST 28 April 2021.

The Recycling and Clean Energy road map identifies opportunities such as making recyclable products, making products from recycled feedstocks, making equipment for clean energy systems, and making low emissions products with clean energy. It also includes overlapping areas of opportunity related to advanced materials, and recycling components such as PV panels and batteries. Applications close 5PM AEST 5 May 2021.

Vision and opportunities

Australia will become a global centre for commercialising and manufacturing cutting-edge technology products and services for the global resources sector that benefit a range of other industries.

Australia will have a strategic critical minerals processing industry that captures significant additional value, strengthens our global position downstream from our resource endowments and underpins a range of advanced manufacturing opportunities.

$30m Grants Program to Support Local Manufacturing

In addition to the Modern Manufacturing Initiative funding for each of the six national manufacturing priority Translation and Integration streams, there is a further $30 million grants program to support local manufacturing. Commercialisation Fund grants will be between $100,000 and $1 million and must be matched by industry. These smaller-sized grants will complement the larger projects that will be supported through the $1.3 billion Modern Manufacturing Initiative.

The Commercialisation Fund will run over an 18-month period. The first round of funding will provide $20 million while a subsequent round will deliver the remaining $10 million.

The fund will be managed and administered by the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC), in collaboration with the five other Industry Growth Centres and the CSIRO.
